About Us

The word “hearth” (or “foyer” in French) refers to the floor and surrounding area of a fireplace, and is often used to symbolize one’s home.
Thus, our name symbolizes the home and community that we aim to foster— a warm, collective space where everyone can gather.

If you have ever felt like you are alone in feeling anxious, filled with grief, angry, hopeless, helpless, guilty, or confused about the climate crisis,
you aren’t. It can feel “taboo” to talk about these feelings, or like there’s simply always something more pressing in the way,
or like your friends or family simply don’t understand.

That’s why Climate Hearth exists.

We build a climate-conscious community, so that we can process complex climate emotions, learn supportive tools for coping, and design pathways for action— together.

Emerging research on eco-emotions like eco-anxiety suggests that group-oriented initiatives, like support groups, are an effective coping strategy because they create a “social safety net” (Climate Psychology Alliance 2022). This backs up what we already know: we are stronger together. Learn more about the research that supports our work here.

November 2023 / Founding

Climate Hearth started as a student-led Eco-Anxiety Peer Support Group based at Concordia University in 2023, facilitated bi-weekly by Aspen Murray and Di Wang. The goal of this group was to create a supportive and accessible space where people concerned about the climate crisis could come together and process their feelings with likeminded individuals. The demand was instantly there: folks of all ages, careers, and backgrounds found their way to our Support Group, telling us they had been searching for a space like this.

… and the research backs that demand up: a 2025 study revealed that nearly one million Canadians experience serious climate anxiety (Harper et al. 2025)!

April 2025 / Expansion & Rebrand

In order to meet the growing needs of our community, and in acknowledgement of the fact that addressing the emotional impacts of the climate crisis is an essential climate solution, our team decided to expand into a larger organization. We officially launched as Climate Hearth | Foyer pour le climat, a bilingual, youth-led organization based in Tiohtià:ke (colonially-known as Montreal).

August 2025 / IMMERSION

In partnership with Shake Up the Establishment, we hosted the first iteration of IMMERSION,
a free, weekend-long eco-anxiety event series packed with eco-arts workshops, an urban biodiversity walk on Mont Royal, and climate action strategy sessions.

September 2025 / French Language Expansion

We began offering our Eco-Anxiety Peer Support Group programming in French.

January 2026 / Non-Profit Accreditation & New Location

We registered as a national non-profit organization (#1762281-3) and transitioned to weekly, bilingual support sessions held at MTL Healing Space.
